Refreshed Deere 9 Series Tractors
John Deere - March 4, 2021
The 2022 iteration of John Deere’s 9 Series Tractors has undergone significant refinements, designed to empower modern farmers to begin field work sooner and extend their operational window, ensuring timely completion of seeding, soil preparation, and planting within the most favorable conditions.
The revitalized 9 Series lineup encompasses wheeled 9R models, two-track 9RT configurations, and four-track 9RX tractors, all engineered to maximize acreage coverage with greater precision and efficiency, while simultaneously lowering operating expenses – all within a more spacious and comfortable operator environment. John Deere stands alone as the sole manufacturer offering all three distinct tractor layouts.
“Farmers will greatly appreciate the enhanced low-end torque and pulling power of the all-new John Deere PowerTech 13.6 L diesel engine,” explained Ryan Jardon, product marketing manager for John Deere. “This engine delivers power ranging from 390 to 590 horsepower and operates with a remarkable 50% reduction in engine noise. Furthermore, routine maintenance procedures have been simplified.” Jardon continued, “Our highest horsepower models, the 9R 640 and 9RX 640, are propelled by a Cummins 15 L diesel engine.”
To accommodate the increased horsepower and ballast of the articulated 9 Series Tractors, critical undercarriage, axle, and front-frame components have been reinforced and improved. These enhancements have resulted in a higher tractor weight and expanded the maximum available ballast capacity from 60,000 to 67,000 pounds, ensuring optimal power transfer to the ground. Factory-installed front-weight support and weights are now standard on the 9RX models. Rear-axle load ratings on John Deere Scraper Special 9R and 9RX Tractors have been increased to 26,500 pounds.
Certain 9 Series Tractors can be equipped with hydraulic Intelligent Power Management (IPM) which unlocks up to 50 additional horsepower, contingent on the selected gear. This supplementary power is delivered through intelligent software that continuously monitors hydraulic demand and engine output. “This represents an ideal performance boost when tackling challenging terrain, navigating steep slopes, or operating high-demand implements, such as air-seeding equipment. Hydraulic IPM is available on the 9RT 570, and 9R/9RX 590 and 640 Tractors,” Jardon noted.
All 9 Series Tractors come standard with factory-installed JDLink connectivity, complemented by an integrated StarFire 6000 GPS receiver, Generation 4 CommandCenter display, and AutoTrac guidance. These technologies empower operators to minimize overlap, maximize input efficiency, and reduce operator stress. JDLink includes a 5-year service subscription, enabling customers to readily benefit from a connected machine experience, encompassing machine-to-machine communication, real-time data streaming of machine, field, and crop information to the John Deere Operations Center, Wireless Data Transfer, and John Deere Connected Support. These integrated capabilities help farmers save both time and resources.
“The factory-installed Automation 4.0 features deliver season-long benefits,” Jardon stated. “For example, AutoTrac Turn Automation and MachineSync facilitate consistent operations during headland turns and when multiple machines are working in unison, such as during seeding with two tractors operating in the same field. Automation 4.0 also introduces AutoPath, enabling farmers to accurately document and meticulously follow each row of crops throughout the growing season.” Jardon continued, “By leveraging data gathered during the initial pass – whether strip-till or planting – AutoPath establishes precise guidance lines for all subsequent field operations, regardless of machine type or implement width. This simplifies row finding, minimizes overlaps and crop damage, and eliminates the need for ‘guess rows.’”
Inside the redesigned 9 Series cab, operators will find increased storage capacity, a greater number of USB ports, and improved connectivity options compared to previous generations. For an experience akin to automotive comfort, an optional 6.5-inch touchscreen satellite radio can be added, offering smartphone integration for voice command operation or integrated controls for navigation, phone calls, music playback, and messaging.
All 9 Series Tractors provide leading-edge operator comfort and visibility, with a choice of Select, Premium, or Ultimate cab packages to suit individual preferences.
The Ultimate comfort and convenience package includes footrests, a refrigerator, and a heated, ventilated massaging seat that can swivel up to 25 degrees to the left and 40 degrees to the right, enhancing operator visibility and comfort. The Ultimate visibility package features 24 work LEDs and eight convenience LEDs, electric, heated, telescoping mirrors, sunshades, front, right, side, and rear wipers, and integrated front and rear cameras. For customers desiring the pinnacle of both packages, John Deere offers the Signature Edition, which also includes the Generation 4 Extended Display, dual hydraulic pumps, Automation 3.0 activation / AutoLoad for Scraper Special tractors, and HydraCushion front-axle suspension on 9R Tractors.
All 9 Series Tractors possess the power and versatility to help operators cover more ground in less time. On wheel 9R Tractors, six models are available, ranging from 390 to 640 horsepower, and can be equipped with a wide array of tire options. The HydraCushion suspension, an industry-exclusive option, reduces tractor bouncing during transport, improves ride quality, and minimizes the potential for powerhop in the field, maximizing power transfer to the ground.
Three two-track 9RT models are available, ranging from 470 to 570 horsepower, and feature the industry-exclusive AirCushion walking beam suspension for enhanced ride comfort. Two-track tractors offer a large footprint with reduced ground pressure and lower slip values compared to wheel tractors, making them well-suited for straight-line pulling and broad-acre tillage.
Four models of John Deere 9RX four-track tractors are available, ranging from 490 to 640 horsepower – the highest horsepower levels offered in a four-track tractor. Multiple track widths and tread spacings are available, allowing these tractors to be utilized in both row-crop and broad-acre applications where increased traction and flotation are required. Four-post cab suspension is standard, damping pitch and roll, isolating the cab from shocks, and providing maximum comfort and ride quality in both the field and on the road. Four-track 9RX Tractors deliver the comfort and maneuverability of a wheel tractor, combined with the pulling performance and flotation of a track tractor.
