The New Holland T4 Electric Tractor: A Revolution in Farming

New Holland – December 9, 2022

CNH Industrial proudly unveiled the New Holland T4 Electric Power – a pioneering, fully electric light utility tractor prototype boasting autonomous capabilities – during its Tech Day event in Phoenix, Arizona, USA.

A dedicated and collaborative effort between our expert teams in the USA (Burr Ridge, Detroit) and Italy (Modena) dramatically accelerated this prototype’s development. This was achieved through a strategic partnership with Monarch Tractor, an innovative leader in electrified agricultural technology based in California, USA. Our combined expertise and resources, amplified by Monarch’s groundbreaking technology, have made this world-first achievement possible.

This product breakthrough represents the latest step in our comprehensive electrification strategy. While the presented prototype carries the New Holland Agriculture brand, the commercial version will also be available under our Case IH banner. It builds upon the success of the award-winning e-Source power pack – an external generator designed for electric farm implements.

“The T4 Electric Power offers an ideal solution for operations requiring moderate horsepower. Its versatility suits a wide range of applications, including mixed farming, livestock management, municipal services, orchards, and specialized crops. We understand our customers are eager to embrace this type of technology, making it a natural progression for us to continue our journey toward electrified agriculture with this platform,” explains Marc Kermisch, Chief Digital & Information Officer at CNH Industrial.

The Details: Power, Performance, and Precision

This first-generation battery-electric light vehicle falls within the utility tractor category. Commercial production is anticipated to commence in late 2023, with an expanded product line to follow.

Power: Up to 120 horsepower

Maximum Torque: Up to 440 Newton-meters

Four-Wheel Drive: Standard

Maximum Speed: 40 kilometers per hour

Zero Emissions: Guaranteed

Depending on the specific workload, the tractor’s battery pack can provide a full day of operational capacity. Utilizing readily available fast-charging systems, a full recharge can be achieved in just one hour. The tractor’s integrated power outlets readily support common farm tasks like welding and drilling. It also functions as a reliable backup power source for daily needs or emergency situations, and efficiently provides energy for electric implements. Traditional mechanical, hydraulic, and Power Take-Off implements remain fully compatible.

Performance

In rigorous testing, the T4 Electric Power demonstrated exceptional performance compared to conventional diesel tractors. Its remarkable responsiveness results in a more assertive, efficient, and superior level of traction control. Smoother shifting and gear changes provide an enhanced driving experience. Furthermore, customers can expect up to a 90% reduction in operating costs, achieved by eliminating diesel fuel expenses and associated maintenance requirements.

And it operates in near silence. Noise levels are reduced by as much as 90%, and vibration is significantly minimized. This compliance with strict municipal noise regulations enables nighttime operation, and enhances the wellbeing of livestock, particularly within enclosed environments like barns.

Precision

What truly sets this tractor apart is its integration of autonomous features and automated capabilities. These technologies collectively deliver leading-edge solutions that support operators of all skill levels.

The T4 Electric Power’s roof-mounted array of sensors, cameras, and control units enables its sophisticated autonomous and automated functionalities. Farmers can remotely activate the tractor using a smartphone application. The ‘Shadow Follow Me’ mode allows for synchronized operation between machines. A comprehensive 360-degree perception system detects and avoids obstacles. Telematics and auto-guidance systems monitor and regulate all functions. Fleet Management tools allow farm managers to assign tasks to individual pieces of equipment. Implement recognition ensures seamless connection with the required attachment. And offboard digital services empower farmers to operate the tractor from any location, at any time, while monitoring its performance and battery status.

CNH Industrial’s global Design Team has shaped our portfolio of alternative power solutions. The T4 Electric Power on display features New Holland’s ‘Clean Blue’ color scheme – also present on the recently launched T7 Methane Power LNG at Tech Day. Its illuminated leaf emblem and signature taillights provide a distinct aesthetic departure from traditional diesel tractors.

The T4 Electric Power joins the New Holland T7 Methane Power LNG and T6 Methane Power tractors in our alternative power portfolio, further demonstrating CNH Industrial's dedication to sustainably advancing agriculture for farmers worldwide.
