While an entire series of tractors was referred to as Case 400, the actual Case model 400 tractor was the standard-tread diesel version. The tractors in the 400 series are identified by a two-digit code (4xx). The second digit indicates the engine type: 0 for diesel (40x) and 1 for gas/lp (41x). The third digit indicates the chassis type: 0 for standard (4x0), 1 for row-crop (4x1), 3 for high-crop (4x3).
